Gender sensitive infrastructure - Capturing the linkages between infrastructure and women’s workforce participation

The initiative on Gender Sensitive Infrastructure aims to identify how urban infrastructure, especially mobility systems, impacts women’s workforce participation—particularly for low-income urban women. Through qualitative research in four cities, it highlights key barriers such as poor transport connectivity, unsafe public spaces, and lack of caregiving support. The study provides targeted recommendations to improve infrastructure design, accessibility, and safety to enable greater economic participation by women.

Walk for Safety: Reclaiming Public Spaces:
Empowering Women for Safer Cities

Crime, an ever-present threat to personal safety, disproportionately affects women globally. In India, a woman encounters harassment in public spaces every 51 minutes (Bhattacharya, 2016). The tragic gang rape and subsequent death of 'Nirbhaya' in Delhi in 2012 sparked widespread outrage, underscoring the urgent necessity for safe public environments. Beyond individual well-being, public safety profoundly influences economic vitality and the attractiveness of urban centers. Secure neighborhoods not only instill confidence but also attract tourism and investment.

Global Imperatives:
Women, Peace, and Security

India's rank of 133 out of 167 countries in the 2019 Women, Peace, and Security (WPS) Index underscores the imperative for concerted efforts in Inclusion, Security, and Justice. Empowerment, as defined by the United Nations, encompasses self-worth, the freedom of choice, access to opportunities, and the capacity to effect societal change.

We4Her's Initiative: Empowering
Women in Public Spaces

In alignment with UN Sustainable Development Goals 5 and 11, the We4Her Foundation launched a campaign in Defence Colony, Delhi, aimed at raising awareness and reclaiming public spaces to foster safer cities for women. Families convenced from 9-11 pm to participate in this initiative.

Supporting women against domestic violence

When domestic violence cases or any other form of abuse are reported, seeking justice becomes a daunting battle for many women. While some manage to attain justice, for most, the process is arduous and disheartening, leading to a loss of willpower. The complex legal procedures and emotional toll often result in women feeling overwhelmed and discouraged. Despite efforts, many are unable to navigate through the system effectively, causing them to lose hope or become lost in the intricate process.

Since August 2020, the foundation has facilitated settlements in cases filed against abusive in-laws and spouses, ensuring ongoing follow-ups to guarantee sustained relief for the survivors.
